A day trip to Macau seemed like an interesting prospect. It’s a 1-hour ferry ride from the ferry port in Hong Kong. It’s a little bit strange because you are traveling from one SAR (Special Administrative Region) to another, but you do need your passport, as you do pass through immigration checks at both ends of your journey. The currency also changes, though Hong Dollars are also acceptable in Macau.
A new there was a Portuguese history, but other than that I did not know a great deal about the place before I went. I learned that there are 61 casinos. Amazingly the gambling in Macau is seven times larger than Las Vegas. When I arrived at the ferry terminal I was soon to see the casinos. I walked on past and headed to the Fisherman’s Wharf. It was a nice enough area to wander around and through, though I didn’t spend too much time.

The main area I wanted to visit was in and around Senado Square which I heard gave more of that Portuguese vibe. Walking From Senado Square to the St Paul Ruins and on to the Macau Museum. This area was picturesque and with lots of tourists and local shops. It definitely gave a flavor of its Portuguese history through the 400 years of the colonial administration.

It was a nice sunny day and fun to spend a little time in a place a part of China, but so very different. I headed back to the ferry port and sped off back to Hong Kong with Turbo Jet Ferries on the short one hour ferry ride. Passport checked and back into Hong Kong.
