Isle of Skye Catches the Eye

Today brought a tour round the Isle of Skye taking in the far corners of this special and different island. I’ve been to Scotland a number of times but I have never been this far north, and it is a little bit different. Special places, a special aura and just some things that you would not find anywhere else.

From a base in Portree and a beautful stay at Hotel Marmalade provided the start for a trip up north to Uig and around Quiraing.  This is a drive that is amazing, for much of the middle part of the journey on the A855 single track roads shows you a picturesque eye into Skye.

This whole area of Skye is known as Trotternish and provides a peninsula that captures why Scotland is spoken of so highly as such a wonderful place to visit and stay a while.  Towards the east end of the drive you will find the Old Man of Storr, locally known as Bodach an Stoir, but when I found him he was covered in clouds and mist so I found it hard to view.

I’d like to say this picture below was mine, but it wasn’t .. but you get the idea… it’s pretty cool.

The rest of the day trip was spent venturing to the west side of Skye, and venturing to the Neist Point Lighthouse on the NW tip.  This journey along yet another single track long and winding road found sheep getting into all sorts of unimaginable places.  On hill sides of 45 degrees, behind rocks and within inches of the road .. a combination of either eating, sleeping or avoiding the wind.  At times I think I saw sheep who were doing all three things at once !!!

The long road to the lighthouse ends and meets a long and winding path.  In the blustery wind of the Skye coast I scampered the long winding path to reach the views and lighthouse that made the cold and wind worthwhile..

Back to the charming Portree to round out an eventful day of exploring this majestic Isle.  The Isle of Skye sure does catch the eye.

  1. Im going here in 3 weeks, very excited! Where are the colourful houses? Seen them in lots of pics and i want to visit!

  2. The coloured houses are in Portree. Skye is a great place .. I’d recommend the drive from Portree up to Uig and continue on the A855 that goes all the way around the coast line and back down to Staffin.

Lots of places recommended on Trip Advisor are not open in the winter, so good to check.
