Z-Z-Zagreb

Z-Z-Z-Zagreb

An early morning alarm provided a 4am start to the day with an early flight out of Dubrovnik to fly up to Zagreb at 6.40am.  Arriving tired and hungry I left my luggage in the Zagreb hotel at sometime around 9am, and set off to Sesvete train station to head into Zagreb.

Zagreb is the capital city of Repulike of Hrvaste … Croatia to you and me.  It became the capital of Croatia in 1991 when the country became independent.

The sunny skies of the south had changed into the snow in the air of Zagreb ~ colder, but not too cold thankfully.   10 hours today packed with lots of sightseeing, different beers and good food around this engaging city.

Those European folks sure knew how to build a cathedral, and you just have to admire how darn fine this building is…

Sometimes one of the joys of being in a foreign country is not understanding anyone.  Obviously this can get problematic at times, but it does make for a fascinating time.  Getting on the right train is not one of those instances ~ my train announcement was in Croatian, and I was lost in translation.  It transpired that I was on the right train (though I didn’t know that at the time), but I was going the wrong way.  Being out at night in a desolate strange part of the city was not filling me with excitement.  I had in previous days driven in the car from Dubrovnik – Montenegro – Bosnia – Dubrovnik covering almost 350 miles without getting lost, but one simple 10 minute train journey was too much for Avison to handle …. though it worked out alright in the end.

Long day. Sleep.

  1. Fresh fruits and veggies! I remember the old east block markets, including in the former Yugoslavia where the only thing green was the mold growing on the empty shelves.
