Sensational Cyprus

Cyprus was good, really good.  Warm sunny days and a cool sea breeze made the weather perfect to enjoy this beautiful country.  Central Paphos is somewhat of a tourist spot, but it is ok and not over-run. You don’t have to travel far to get away from it all, literally.  The coastline is idyllic with an endless coast of sun kissed beaches with no one is sight.  In the car as I drove the coast the vision of the green blue sea made it hard not to stop.

They say if you want to be historic, go where the history is.  Cyprus has an abundance of that.  So, I went to Petra tou Romiou which as legend has it, is the birthplace of Aphrodite.  These kinds of historic stories don’t happen in all places and it is just a bit glorious if you think about it for a while.  Cyprus is in an interesting place in the worldlocated in Western Asia, south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, northwest of Israel, north of Egypt, and southeast of Greece.  That’s a melting pot.  Cyprus was though a British colony until as recently as 1960, and that is still noticeable in how much English is spoken and reference to English in most places.

As I was wanting to do a lot of travelling around the Cypriot isle then having a car was needed for this destination. That said, I could have stayed and lounged at the hotel in the sun quite easily, but I wouldn’t have seen Cyprus.  Having a car was a must.  I managed lots of other stop offs on my journey into learning more about Cyprus, and in particular in the last couple of days around the south west coast of the country around Paphos.  The ancient Tomb of the Kings. Paphos Castle, Sanctuary of Aphrodite, St Paul’s Pillar and of course checking out those wonderful beaches.

During the time in Cyprus I found time to sample three local dishes all with a Greek influence Beef Stifaldo, Musako and Kleftiko, everyone I enjoyed, and will be “trying” to recreate sometime soon.

Four sun filled days, enjoyed all aspects. Big YES and thank you Cyprus.
